Should schools sell coffee?

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks worldwide. While it is often advised for underage people not to drink it, high school students tend to make or buy some as a part of their daily routine. If consumed too much, it can cause many problems like restlessness, stomach problems, and can even lead to anxiety.

“I think schools should only sell coffee to seniors. They’re all mostly adults and know how to consume stuff with portions. Underclassmen might drink it too often or too much,” said Deerfield Beach High School senior Salma Dominguez.

There are two types of coffee: decaf and caffeinated. Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It increases brain activity and reduces fatigue. However, excessive amounts can have negative effects on the body. As a stimulant, too much can speed up one’s heartbeat and breathing rate, mimicking the symptoms of anxiety. In the long run, coffee can affect sleeping schedules, density of bones, and alter stomach acidity. Caffeine is also considered a drug meaning if easily accessible to students, they could grow an addiction and suffer long-term effects.

“While yes, coffee can be bad, but it depends on the dose. I think schools, specifically high schools, should sell coffee because someone may need the energy boost for the day and not have the time to pass by a place to get some,” said DBHS junior Carter Briggs. “It’s convenient and can help the student more than you would think.”

Many people have experienced the need for an energy boost at some point in their lives. Although it is crucial to remember that coffee should be consumed in moderation, providing students with coffee can have a positive impact on their education. Coffee is a simple tool that can help students stay alert, focused, and productive throughout the day. Schools can help students keep up with their classes and lessons by offering coffee.

“I personally don’t drink coffee much, but if it works for other people why take it away? Schools should sell or give out coffee to those who may need it. If you don’t, you don’t, but some do,” said DBHS sophomore Dallas Mclendon.

Coffee can be a helpful beverage for those who enjoy it, but it is not a necessity. However, high schools should consider selling coffee to their students to provide a boost when needed.
