Making the most of spring

April carries with it the season of keeping green and spring cleaning. Spring is the time of regrowth, new beginnings, and a clean slate as symbolized by the Earth’s nature blooming. Society has taken notice of this and takes this month as a platform for rejuvenation and enjoying nature.

As Earth Day approaches on the 22nd, there has never been a better time to help the planet while having fun. A relaxing day can also be a productive one by helping to reclaim its habitats. This can include supporting the pollinators. Crafting a bee house is an interesting way to get creative and help the ecosystem all together; some of the materials may even be recycled or used for crafts. The blueprints are like a birdhouse, with wooden tubes for nesting and flowers to pollinate.

Besides providing shelter for one of nature’s biggest helpers, spring is also a time of self-reflection. As the air becomes crisp and flowers blossom, nature may be a soulful retreat for the mind to nurture itself. Unwinding now and then for hiking, fishing, or simply meditating outside can be therapeutic to many. This especially applies to those struggling with seasonal depression, in which time the sun can increase serotonin and naturally provide people a sense of relief.

Along with healing the mind, healing the Earth is just as dire. Starting a garden comes to be a perfect balance of both. Simple as it sounds, weeding or planting seeds allows one to form a relaxing repetition of sensory tasks. When plotting soil or harvesting fruits, one is also attentive to the birds chirping and the cool wind on their skin. For many, gardening can break cycles of intrusive or obsessive thoughts and helps bring clarity.

On the topic of mental health, it is also crucial to seize control of one’s well-being. Spring cleaning is not only applied to the month but is encouraged as a ritual every few weeks. There is more to the activity that’s beneficial for the mind and body than just dusting, deep cleaning, and organization. Staying in the same clutter can lead to overwhelming stress that can be minimized after an unwinding clean alongside music.

Spring is a time of giving to the environment, but it also gives oneself time to enjoy the small things. There are many hobbies to adopt during the season to help sustain the planet and the mental psyche. However, they do not need to stop once summer comes along, as a positive force is encouraged any time of day.
