Do people idolize idols too much?

Idols were meant for the result of fans and idolization. Yet some argue that the extent of putting these people on a pedestal may have gotten too much. Others think the latter but a majority stand on this point. On many social media platforms, there are many influencers or idols, which many people, mostly teenagers, seem to look up to or try to live a similar lifestyle.

“People do idolize too much, sometimes when they focus on their idol’s life instead of their own,” said Deerfield Beach High freshman Shelsie Escarment. “It could be both [harmful and harmless], idolizing too much could cause you to get disconnected from yourself, but if you idolize at a healthy rate, it could help you improve yourself.”

It is common for people to have role models, especially those who are famous and have a prominent social image. Having good idols and successful individuals to look up to can be inspirational, especially for younger audiences. They can be motivated to strive for success and do their best. A multitude of celebrities are known to promote better lifestyles to their audience; a trait in idols that should be sought out and although small, can change people’s lives for the better.

“Idolizing is harmful because they may stalk their idols and want to be like them too much,” said DBHS freshman Antonio Brown.

Along with the effects of consuming their content, it can also change someone’s personal life to a tee; sometimes not in the healthiest way. At times, a person can become so obsessed with a celebrity that they will begin to stalk them and hunt down both private and public information. There have been cases of fans breaking into an idol’s hotel room, chasing them, or trespassing on their company’s property. It endangers the life of the celebrity and will usually always end up with the fans behind bars.

Considering both sides, it is still advisable to practice moderation when idolizing someone, as it can gradually evolve into an unhealthy obsession. It is perfectly acceptable to admire individuals, particularly celebrities, but it is also important to remember they are also human beings.
