How idolizing celebrities poses a negative effect on the public

Most certainly, at one point during day-to-day life, a celebrity has been a number one priority to people. These people are heavily admired and thrown onto an unreachable pedestal. This has slowly become a typical occurrence, as it is in human nature to nosy into the lives of someone else who serves high importance to an audience.

Putting life into perspective and allowing people to form communities based on their admiration for certain people can lead to toxic obsessions and false idolizations, even if these impulses are hard to control.

The development of social media and modern technology, which made celebrities part of the new pop culture, is one of the crucial distinctions that distinguishes today from then. These people have not always made the most moral or knowledgeable decisions. Yet, due to their current fame and massive fan bases, they continue to be adored by committed followers despite their wrongdoings.

People prefer to pick and choose who they turn a blind eye to in these situations, constantly forgetting that despite their fame, they are not so different from them.

A prime example is beauty guru Jeffree Star, a man who grew from making music to having an entire makeup line. His devoted followers thought he was an amazing, kind man. That was until it was brought to light that he was a bully towards internet star Trisha Paytas, he lied about his past to others and manipulated many people including James Charles.

In the end, society’s reluctance to hold these public figures responsible for their deeds has succeeded in producing and fostering the worship of unhealthy role models and false idols whose deeds should not be rewarded or justified under the appeal of fame and money.

The obsession with these people’s lives is reflected in and promoted by conveniently accessible news articles that consistently focus on celebrity events and “gossip.”

In the process, the public has entrusted celebrities with too much authority. The line between appreciation and over-idolization is clear, and it is crucial to recognize and respect that line. Many people need to stand back and realize that these superstars are not representative of everyday life. They do not offer enough advice on how to live life. The pedestal they are put on shouldn’t be for any other reason than the art they create and partake in.
