 Moana sequel in the works

Everyone’s favorite Polynesian Disney princess, Moana, will make her return in a new movie that was recently announced. Moana 2 is set to come out on November 27th, 2024, which is just a day before Thanksgiving. She will continue her path overseas alongside Maui and new allies.

The daughter of the island chief, Moana Waialiki of Motunui, in the eyes of the fans, is indeed the Polynesian Disney idol. Though she falls under the Disney princess umbrella, she is not a princess in a cultural sense. She is made aware that after Maui had taken Te Fiti’s heart.

It caused devastation and mayhem that would eventually extend throughout the whole sea. The ocean has chosen her to sail across it and restore it. But the only way to do it was to have Maui accompany her on this adventure. Moana and Maui then set out to save her people.

Both Moana and Maui face multiple challenges on their way to Te Fiti; such as a mythical crab taking possession of the heart, Maui losing control of his powers, and the mighty fight at the end with the giant volcanic demon. Moana eventually returned the heart to Te Fiti, bringing the beautiful island to life.

So far, there is not a lot of information on the storyline. However, the trailer shows there will be some sort of sea monster lurking in the ocean, which may be the main antagonist in the movie as Moana and Maui travel together.

Fans were happy to know that Auli’i Carvalho will continue to voice Moana and Dwayne Johnson will continue to voice Maui. Although, the director for this film is different than the first. David G. Derrick Jr. will be directing rather than John Musker and Ron Clements. Derrick Jr. is best known for working on the art of Megamind, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Strange World. He worked on the art of Moana as well and has now been promoted to director.

Many fans were skeptical about how Moana would be portrayed in the new movie. They have theorized that she will represent a part of the LGBTQIA+ community by coming out as transgender. If this was the case, that would make Moana the first Disney Princess to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I’ve heard that Moana will become the first Disney princess to become a transgender male in the movie. I don’t know if it’s true or not but if it is that would be interesting,” said Deerfield Beach High School junior Loudiana Louis-Jean.

There are some negative and positive reactions to this decision for Moana, but the LQBGTQIA+ community may feel a form of acceptance and support coming from Disney as Moana would be representing their community.

Despite all the discourse, this will certainly be a good movie for fans and their families to watch together on the big screen. Eventually, it will air on Disney+, where all their other movies end up. With new enemies and possible allies beside Maui, everyone is eager to see what Moana will accomplish on her next voyage across the sea.
