Filling Out the Future

Course card

Every year, Deerfield Beach High School students must fill out course card applications online to select their classes for the following school year. Students must choose their core and elective classes to ensure they are taking the correct step toward graduation.

Students can have up to four electives, and every student must have a reading and math course that is required to graduate.

To build skills in DHBS students, everyone must participate in a Career Technical Education track. These tracks include Finance, Culinary Arts, and non-journalism CBA classes. These CTE tracks allow students to build the necessary skills and acquire industry certifications.

International Baccalaureate (IB) students have four-year plans. IB students choose their classes from the jump since their initiation year; meaning they are exempt from the obligation of filling out this form and their classes are already set for the upcoming school year. Any changes are taken by either IB Counselor Nancy Carter or Samantha Sweeting and sent to IB Magnet Coordinator William Collazo.

The course card also allows students interested in dual enrollment, honors, and advanced placement to inform their counselors. Students are urged to challenge themselves with challenging courses.

Filling out the course cards saves time and makes it easier for students to take classes that they will enjoy.

“I enjoy filling out my course card because I like having the choice of what I want to accomplish in school,” said DBHS sophomore Ernkina Nelson.

Students will meet with their guidance counselors to make their final course selections throughout the year. Along with the independent choice, counselors are required to double-check the schedule for final adjustments. Inquiries are encouraged to ensure that there are no regrets in the long run. Adjustments can also be made in the next school year but there is a highly likely chance that there will be no space for movement. For students curious about their assigned counselors, their names and contact information can be found here.
