The National Honor Society (NHS) is a scholarship organization that creates future leaders in their High Schools in the nation. Members of the NHS are to achieve their future goals and innovate. The Deerfield Beach High School chapter of the National Honor Society is starting the year off with a bang. In January, the NHS will be hosting two drives: a book drive and a destination dorm drive

“Destination Dorm is an organization that collects donations for students that are in need,” says NHS advisor Ms. Cruz. “Including being fostered, homeless or in need.”

The Destination Dorm Drive collects items that help college freshmen create a comfortable place to call home. These donations include household essentials that students can utilize daily: bed sheets, pillows, shower curtains, lamps, and rugs are some items that can be donated.

Ms. Cruz will send an e-mail to all the teachers and students via Remind stating that students who donate will get service hours. This means participating in the drive can help students meet their graduation requirements for service hours.

Students have until January 30th to donate dorm essentials to Ms. Cruz in room 152. After the deadline, Ms. Cruz will send all donations to the Destination Dorm organization so they can be put into care packages for eligible students.

Although the NHS organization at Deerfield Beach High is doing its part, the Destination Dorm is a county-wide scholarship program by the Broward Education Foundation. This foundation provides Broward students and teachers with grants and the opportunity to make their move smoother.

Interested students can apply for this scholarship on the Broward Education Foundation website until April 1st . Find this link by typing “Destination Dorm” in the search bar and clicking on “Apply Here”. After the applications are submitted, they will perform a screening process for eligibility.

Deerfield Beach High School’s NHS has begun 2024 with two impactful events so far and there’s more to what the future holds with the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. In collaboration with the Broward Education Foundation, the NHS is providing emerging college students with the opportunity to make their dorms feel like home.
