Should children watch T.V.

Every parent raises their children differently, this is shown in cases regarding the amount of screen time a child is allowed. Some parents completely forbid their children from screen time, while others provide them more digital freedom. The argument about screentime or TV being good or bad is not as clear as many people make it out to be.

The number of television shows aimed at children has increased over the past years. With more and more children tuning in to watch their favorite shows many have wondered whether allowing their children to watch TV could lead to mental benefits. According to a study done at the University of Portsmouth, a parent watching TV with their child is more beneficial to a child’s learning because the adult can engage with their child. Additionally, a study done by the Child Mind Institute states, “active viewing” and asking open-ended questions can help a child learn from situations covered in an episode.

Another factor that may be affected by screen time is physical health. The reason for this is
because when a child is watching TV, they are more likely to snack mindlessly. Studies show that if a parent were to limit this activity, the less likely they are to gain excess weight and bremain at a healthy BMI. Of course, there are always other factors so excess screentime may not always be the case.

“I can usually control what I eat while I’m watching something, but I can definitely see how
eating too many snacks can happen. If you don’t have enough self-control, it’ll be hard. But I
feel like that only applies to really young kids nowadays,” says Deerfield Beach High School
junior Ivetty Mendoza.

On par with all things to be concerned about with growth, TV should generally be consumed in
moderation. Most of these experiences are personal and rules should be determined by parents.
However, pros and cons should be considered.
