Pink October

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

About two million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. About 240,000 of those diagnoses are breast cancer. This month of October raises awareness about breast cancer. Not only does this month help with raising awareness, but there are hundreds of organizations that help raise funds for research and support men and women who are affected by breast cancer.

“This month represents awareness for Breast Cancer,” says Deerfield Beach High School freshman Jahdane Rowe.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established in the year 1985 by a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. Multiple women played crucial roles in the breast cancer awareness movement. Of those women there is Evelyn Lauder, who created the signature pink ribbon, and Betty Ford, who is credited as the founder of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Along with recognizing the pink ribbon as the official symbol, Lauder founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a nonprofit organization that invests money in breast cancer research. She did this along with Charlotte Haley, who had a history of family members diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thanks to these women, pink is displayed and worn throughout October. Even in schools, it can be a tradition to promote one-day wearing pink clothing.

Deerfield Beach High School is a prime example of encouraging students and faculty to honor this tradition in a show of support for people who might have close family members and friends who have battled breast cancer. Students can even purchase t-shirts on the school’s e-store.

Keeping up with the support, this Friday’s football game against the Plantation High School Colonels is a pink out. This means attendees are welcome to support the Beach Boys’ football team and Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the homecoming game by wearing pink. Tickets to this game can be purchased on GoFan.
