Deerfield’s highly anticipated season awaits

Deerfield Beach High’s boys’ volleyball team has high expectations for the 2023 season. After losing to Stoneman Douglas High in the District Semifinals last season, they are back this year ready to bring it all home.

The Bucks are preparing for the highly anticipated season with practice six days a week. The team is making every second useful to make sure they get the most out of their season.

“A normal practice consists of warming up and getting into drills that will help increase our skills for the season, and we finish off with a scrimmage to help practice an in-game experience,” senior outside hitter and captain Nolan Debrocq said.

Last year was the first full season that DBHS had since the 2018-2019 season because of the pandemic. Now, the Bucks have built a relationship with nine returning players and eight newcomers onto the team.

“I feel pretty confident that we are going to do good as long as we stay focused and put our all into improving as a team,” junior outside hitter Nicola Zagarolo said. “I also think everyone improving over the past year opened a lot of higher level plays we can run that’ll help us too.”

There will be a huge leap from the last season. There were a lot of new players resulting in needing more time than average for training. But now the team understands what needs to be done to be competitive with the high-level teams. Trusting each other on the court is the recipe for success.

“Reliance,” junior middle blocker Donovan Campbell said. “Everyone on the court can be trusted and this year we can run plays effectively and efficiently.”

This year, the boys’ volleyball team has 20 games on the regular season schedule, compared to last year’s 12. With every returning player working on their game in the off-season, the Bucks are destined to improve.

“This team will shock every school we play against,” DeBrocq said. “Nobody has us on their radar. They see Deerfield on the schedule and think we’re another easy win for them. We’re going out there to prove everyone wrong and show them what we’re really about.”

The Bucks are set to seek revenge on schools such as Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, and Monarch High. Their first game of the season is on March 7th at Coral Springs High against Coral Spring High’s boys’ volleyball team. The Bucks volleyball team has been practicing and is ready to give the Colts their first loss of the season.
