Bucks successful through first five games

The Deerfield Beach High boys’ basketball team began the 2022-2023 season with a record of 3-2. They won their first two games, and Deerfield anticipates many more victories throughout the year.

“This season, I hope to win states,” senior guard Jakwon Morris said. “We definitely have a shot.”

On Monday, November 28th, Deerfield kicked off the season with an away game against Cardinal Gibbons High School. With the Chiefs ranked as the fifth-best team in Broward County, the odds of the Bucks winning were slim. However, Deerfield Beach came out on top, winning 73-49 and catching almost everybody off guard.

“We’re putting the whole state on notice,” senior forward Jason Morris said. “We have a legitimate shot at going to and winning the state championship this year.”

Another impressive win was against South Broward High School. The Bucks blew them out of the water with the final score of 81-42.

“We were in the locker room with everybody getting hyped,” junior guard Jaironn Speights said. “Our energy was all the way up from the jump.”

These wins can be awarded to constant hours of strenuous practicing. Boyd Anderson was perhaps the most competitive team they have played in up to this point. It was a close game, but the Cobras got the best of the Bucks, winning 69-64.

“We never give up,” Speights said. “Through all the tough practices and losses, we never gave up, whether we win or lose.”

On Saturday, December 3rd, Deerfield faced off against Suncoast in the Kruel Classic. It was a back-and-forth game until the Chargers pulled away from the hard-fighting Bucks, finishing 62-54. Deerfield took a trip to Cooper City High School on Monday, December 5th. The Bucks left victorious, winning 70-56 over the Cowboys.

“That was a great bounce buck win for us,” senior guard Joe Barksdale said. “Now we’re getting back in the lab and getting ready for the next game.”

The Bucks’ next home game is on Friday, December 9th, at 7:30 pm, when they face off against Dillard High School. Show your Buck Pride and purchase tickets online.
