Pros and cons of gap years
Students around the world go through the average 12 years of school and get the chance to better their future, but typically, after students finish high school, the choice to take a year or more off to pause their education appears as an option. The possibility of taking up this opportunity can fill the mind. The difficulties all show themselves as the choice draws near. With most schools facing the year’s second semester, a new wave of seniors now debates the pros and cons of taking a gap year.
“I think students should take a gap year because some people might feel like they need a break,” states Deerfield Beach High School freshman Erick Sanchez.
After four long high school years, having time for a job to save up money is a package of advantages that comes with taking a gap year. Acquiring new skills, developing independence, and growing personal readiness are some. It is also a great way to add work experience to a resume, which makes it easier to acquire a bigger job, as some workplaces may require at least a one-year minimum of experience.
“I do not think students should take a gap year because it is a waste of time, and it would be better to get your education done sooner rather than later,” says Deerfield Beach High School senior Ivette Rubio.
People believe taking a gap year is a waste of time if not mapped out properly. Having a plan including finances, investments, jobs, and further education can help prevent the result of feeling lost at the end of the year.
Gap years can be relaxing and slow, but it is a good steppingstone to being productive before entering college, even if it is small. Otherwise, all the efforts made could go unnoticed and ultimately, useless. Plus, the option might no longer be available.
Taking a year off after high school has many pros and cons, and it is a job to consider and weigh out to best suit the circumstances. But it is not a decision that should not be taken lightly. Although it presents numerous opportunities and benefits, it can also have detrimental effects if not carefully considered and thought through.
