Deerfield Beach High’s dual enrollment opportunities
Deerfield Beach High School offers multiple dual enrollment programs to prepare students for future college endeavors. The school has created partnerships with various colleges and universities for current high school students to earn college credits that will carry over to the next stage of education. There are a series of requirements for students to be eligible.
To be considered for Broward College Dual Enrollment, the dual enrollment form for each term needs to be signed by a parent/legal guardian, student, school counselor, and principal. The student must be enrolled as a Broward County Public School student with a minimum of 3.0 unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA) and college-level test scores in English, Reading, and Math. Enrolled students must maintain a 2.0 Broward College GPA, and grades in college-level courses cannot fall below a “C.”
Summer dual enrollment for the summer of 2023, hosted by Broward College, holds the same standards with the addition of completing the Accuplacer test. Applicants must take a placement test if this is a student’s first dual enrollment course. The scores are needed before Broward College can accept a dual enrollment form. Thursday, February 9th , is the last day to submit this application. Students are also obligated to join a face-to-face class on campus at least once a week.
Another program providing in-person classes and virtual courses is the University of Florida. This college considers registered Broward County Public Schools upperclassmen. Juniors and seniors should have a 3.6 high school GPA and obtain a specific composite score on the PSAT (1130), SAT (1100), or ACT (22), Only one of these test scores is necessary. The spring 2023 applications are open from October 11th to November 18th .
Participating in this is Florida International University; taking passing scores for a Florida State Board of Education-approved standard placement test. This includes the PERT test (Reading 106, Writing 103), Next-Generation Accuplacer (Reading 256, Writing 253), SAT (Reading 19, Writing and Language 25), and ACT/ACT with Writing (Reading 19, Writing 17.) Alternatively, PSAT scores may be submitted instead (Reading 24, Writing and Language 25.) DBHS sophomores and juniors with a GPA higher than a 3.0 are given this option freely to take the PERT test and can have as many tries as they want in order to pass.
A closer option to residents in Deerfield Beach, would be the Florida Atlantic University dual enrollment. All Broward County Public Schools high school students, with the exception of first-year students, must be approved by their guidance counselor to be registered for this program.. After receiving a completed permission form, enrolled students must achieve a 3.0 cumulative unweighted high school GPA and 2.0 (C grade) or higher in each FAU course.
Unlike the other dual enrollment programs, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University provides aviation courses, such as drone operations and airport business. It is a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools Career Technical Accelerated Programs. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University instructors teach these classes on the high school campus.
Graduates will receive college credits upon completing and passing any dual enrollment program. However, it is not counted toward high school GPA, and the addition of being accepted to college GPA may depend on their policy. Once credits are transferred, the student has improved chances for admission, new skills, scholarship opportunities, and the possibility of less tuition.
