Sequel to the highest-grossing movie

After more than 10 years, Avatar: The Way of Water has finally been released and is taking the world by storm with millions of reviews, opinions, and excitement. The latest film is a sequel follow-up to Avatar (2009) and the second entry in the Avatar movie series, both of which are distributed by 20th Century Studios.

The new movie begins with the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their children), the trouble that follows them, the extent they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they experience. They must go from their home in the forest and travel through Pandora, which is the fictional universe in Avatar, to then arrive at sea residing within a new clan. When a long-forgotten menace reappears, Jake is forced to engage in a challenging conflict with humans.

“It’s more than you can imagine. A fantasy world so vivid and real it commands your full attention for three hours and 12 minutes. And when it’s done, you’ll still want to linger in this heightened state of make-believe.” said DBHS freshmen Adriana Vanegas.

Director James Cameron developed the screenplay for the movie he directed and produced, working from a scenario he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno, Amanda Silver, and Rick Jaffa. In future movies, it is rumored there will be lots of plot twists and even romance between the newly introduced characters in the movies.

“The film’s focus is split in so many directions that none of its characters feel whole, even after three full hours,” said DBHS junior Maria Mendez.

The movie’s plot is meant to stand alone as a complete story, but it will also be a part of a meta-narrative that spans Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, 4, and 5.

Cameras alone don’t complete a movie; albums and audio effects induce strong emotions that leave the audience tied with those feelings after walking out of the movie theater. Grammy award-winning artist, The Weeknd, made an appearance on the Avatar soundtrack. However, classical and film music composer, Simon Franglen, composed the majority of the Avatar: The Way of Water soundtrack with over 20 songs playing throughout the film.

The future upcoming sequels are already in the works. Avatar 3 is planned to be released on December 30th, 2024, and has already been filmed and produced. Avatar 4 was announced on September 3rd, 2022, and has begun filming, it’s scheduled to be released on December 18th, 2026. As for Avatar 5, it is still in pre-production, although, the scheduled release date is December 22nd, 2028.

Visit Pandora once again for the next few years and enjoy the movie before cinemas stop exhibiting the movie in February 2023.
