10 Movies to Get You In the Halloween Spirit

Halloween is upon us once again, but this time it’s a little different. Children and adults alike are hidden in their houses this year, kept from the joys of trick or treating or partying to the break of dawn. The good news is Halloween is full with seasonal movies sure to fright every on in the family.

The Addams Family (1991): A Halloween classic that follows an odd family that seems to be out of place in society. The witches aren’t the only thing strange about this gothic family. The Addams Family is available on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

Hocus Pocus (1993): A cult classic about three witches, who are accidentally summoned in Salem, Massachusetts, and a few kids. The children embark on a dangerous journey to stop the witches from becoming immortal and hurting the human world. This movie is a traditional family Halloween movie, and is perfect for getting into the spirit of the season. Hocus Pocus is available on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Halloweentown (1998): A Disney movie about three siblings that find out they are descendants of powerful witches when they follow their grandma to a mysterious place, Halloweentown. Halloweentown is a place in the monster realm/world where monsters can live their daily lives without facing any type of mistreatment or any weird looks. It’s entertaining and light hearted, and is a great way to unwind after a long day of online school. (Halloweentown is the first in a franchise, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown are its successors) Halloweentown is available on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.

The Conjuring (2013): A spine-chilling horror movie based on a true story.The movie revolves around two paranormal investigators that try to rid a family of a sinister, supernatural spirit in their house. This movie has great effects and is definitely worth the watch. The Conjuring is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Insidious (2010): A horror film about a boy who gets possessed by a demonic spirit in his house. This movie will keep you on your toes, waiting for the next jump scare and adrenaline rush. Insidious is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Corpse Bride (2005): A timeless film by Tim Burton about an engaged man, who meets a dead bride, who takes him underground and marries him. Throughout the film, the man attempts to get back to his fiancée so he can marry her instead of his “corpse bride”. This film is another family pick that can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what age. Corpse Bride is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Casper (1995): A great Halloween comedy that encompasses a love story between a friendly ghost named Casper and a girl named Kat. Kat’s father is brought to the mansion Casper haunts to figure out why the ghost is there. This movie contains ghosts, but it is not scary and it is appropriate to watch with the whole family. Casper is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

The Blair Witch Project (1999): A documentary-style horror movie about three film students that visited a town in Maryland to document stories about the tale of “The Blair Witch”. The students start to experience mysterious events in the woods while trying to film the documentary. This movie is a well-known classic and can be great if you are looking for a movie that’s more of a thriller, rather than a horror film. The Blair Witch Project is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Scary Movie (2000): A parody on cheesy horror movies that has become a staple in Halloween, and has produced 4 sequels. It’s the most satirical film on our list and is perfect to watch when you are not in the mood for a real scare. Scary Movie is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Pet Sematary (1983 or 2019): A thriller based on the book by Stephen King, about a cemetery for pets that brings back the dead, but the revived dead animals form a new, evil personality. a mourning parent buries a child in the cemetery, which brings back them but with a different disposition. The film originally came out in 1983, but in 2019, Hollywood produced a reboot under the same name. Both films follow the same storyline with some changes. Pet Sematary is available on Amazon Prime Video (both 1983 and 2019 versions) and Hulu (the 2019 version).
