Rethinking the need for libraries

Around the 7th century, the oldest library was founded and since then, libraries have been a part of our society. In a world where everything is digital, including books, many have begun to wonder if libraries fulfill their purpose or are necessary nowadays. The simple question is: Are libraries still needed and valued even if the world is moving onto the next digital chapter?

“They (libraries) aren’t useless per se, but they are not used as much anymore. Some people use them, others don’t see any need to,” said Deerfield Beach High sophomore Justin Cruz.

Many people think libraries are useless because the need for physical books has died out in a world where everything is digital. But libraries are more than just a place for dusty old books. While books are the main resource at libraries, many libraries across America offer many other assets at hand. Most offer computers for those who need them regardless of the reason. Whether a person does not have access to one at home or theirs is broken, they can be sure to find one at a library.

“Libraries are still needed. Some people can’t afford computers or books and these places provide them. If they were all just removed those people would be at a disadvantage,” said DBHS sophomore Anisah Mohamed.

The Broward County Main Library in Fort Lauderdale has more than just computers and books. Since its opening in April of 1984, and has been a great, safe place for people of all ages. Alongside books and computers, the library also offers things like tutoring and other sources of extracurricular learning. It offers things such as video games, hands-on design activities, collaborative workshops on social media, performative arts, and more.

“Everyone has been to a library, whether it was a school or public library. It can be an experience to be able to sit in silence and do your work or read a book you’ve been wanting to pick up,” said DBHS sophomore Mia Hoxie.

When people think of libraries, they often envision a space brimming with books where they must remain quiet or face the possibility of being asked to leave. Which is part of the reason why students don’t like to consider it an option. While it is true that many people require silence to concentrate on their academic work or reading, absolute silence is not always mandatory.

Libraries can also serve as wonderful places for people to socialize and connect. In reality, many libraries organize one-of-a-kind events where individuals can gather, exchange ideas, and share information. This is not to say that libraries are a place where people can come to talk, but it is one of the many things they can offer.

In the age of technology, it is easy to overlook libraries when everything is available with a single search. With that in mind, many have begun to wonder if libraries serve a purpose. Libraries, however, are more than places with old books lying around, they offer resources to those who may need them.
