Kona Ice rolls its way to DBHS

Deerfield Beach High School is partnering with Kona Ice to create a fundraiser. Starting April, the truck will be on school grounds for the rest of the remaining school year. ‘Kones’ will be five dollars, but the truck also sells other goodies like candy and snacks. Whether a sweet and cool treat becomes a must on these hot Florida days or just a snack, the Kona ice truck is the best place to satisfy cravings.

Kona Ice is a mobile shaved-ice truck franchise that offers a variety of quick flavors and combinations. The company was founded in 2007 and is based in Florence, Kentucky. Kona Ice trucks are seen at events such as fairs, festivals, and school functions as well as private parties and corporate events. Kona Ice was started by a man with a dream, Tony Lamb, he originally wanted to create an ice-cream truck that was more welcoming and less scary than the run of the mill, and by June of 2007, the shaved ice business was on the road. Little did Lamb know that it would be the first of many.

Lamb want Kona Ice trucks to be inviting and festive; because of this, the trucks are designed to bring a fun and colorful experience to customers, a way they add to the atmosphere is by using music and

lights. The truck is also brightly colored; you may see their mascot, Kona the Penguin, on the sides of the truck.

“I’ve actually been a customer since they’ve been going to my pre-school in the past, so I’ve been a fan since the diaper era. It’s always a pleasant experience, especially with the lady serving us. She’s nice every time I go there after school,” says DBHS senior Lucky Cournyea.

Kona Ice is also the owner of a patented piece of technology known as the “flavorwave”. The flavorwave is attached to the side of the trucks where customers can add their favorite flavor of choice and as many as they can.

The franchise is very adamant about giving back to the community, a portion of all sales go toward local schools, youth sports leagues, and other charitable organizations. Not only that but they love partnering with schools like DBHS, for fundraisers and other school events. Investing in a delicious purchase from Kona Ice can count as a tribute to society. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to quench a hot day’s thirst with a refreshing cup of shaved ice.
