Volunteer in the Community

From compassion to action

Students are strongly encouraged to get involved with their community at Deerfield Beach High. Volunteering is one way to fulfill that sense of unification and help the community while wishing for no monetary reward. However, volunteering does help count towards the 40 community hours required for graduation.

There are many ways to achieve this, whether it’s inside or outside of school. For example, assisting a teacher before or after school and joining key club which specializes in helping the community. Key club does mini-service projects and discusses big opportunities that happen during the weekend or later that week for students to participate in. Members will meet every Thursday after school starting November 10th for an hour. The best way to keep up to date with this information is through the Remind app. For upperclassman, use code @dbhskcud, and underclassmen, use code @dbhskcup to get connected.

For students unable to catch a ride, offering help to a teacher or coach in exchange for a couple of service hours is a great place to start. There could be things as small as grading papers or cleaning up a classroom and more time-consuming activities like decorating a room or timing for a sport if students have time to stay after school.

Not to mention volunteering at places like The Fruitful Field, one of the best community gardens in the city that is student-run and located at 100 NE 44th St, Deerfield Beach, a 5-minute ride from the school. Every 3rd Saturday, they host a volunteer day that is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. They also have a surplus of students hired from DBHS.

Another organization focused on providing for the community is The Deerfield Beach Historical Society which runs the Butler Scholarship and grants students scholarships based on academic and extracurricular activities. This institution is always looking for volunteers to help with special events hosted year-round.

Namely, on October 19th, there’s a History at Noon Lecture, on October 20th, a Love4Arts class, on October 21st, an International Film Night, and more. Contact 954-429-0378 for the event calendar and sign up.

There are so many benefits to volunteer work. A boost in self-esteem, making new friends, learning new skills, and being active within the district. These opportunities are a great way for DBHS students to get involved. Find a cause that speaks to passionate interests and join today.
