IB Pinning Ceremony

 A celebration for official members

Deerfield Beach High’s International Baccalaureate (IB) juniors are working hard this week preparing for the upcoming pinning ceremony or as some may call it, the IB induction ceremony. This event is taking place on Wednesday, January 11th, in the auditorium.

This gathering is for either of the following: IB students joining the International Baccalaureate Program in their junior year, or students that have completed years leading up to 11th grade. Furthermore, the student is recognized as an official candidate for the IB Diploma Program after this protocol.

The ceremony starts off with talents performed by seniors like poems being read in different languages. After, students will then be introduced and invited on to the stage one-by-one to receive a certificate and the designated pin placed by an IB senior. A special tradition that will also be enacted during this event is sand being poured from a small glass into a bigger one. This is a symbol parallel to the transition of being an underclassman IB student to being part of the upperclassmen group.

This 2023 IB induction ceremony is especially important due to the fact that the 2022 ceremony was postponed. So, not only will the juniors be pinned but also the seniors this year who were not able to get the chance to be celebrated.

“To me, this ceremony is validation for all the work you have done up to this point, and it gives you the motivation to complete the rest of the program.”, said IB senior Kristen Mohammed.

It’s without question that this etiquette can promise students a dedicated experience in the IB program for the rest of their time here at Deerfield Beach High School. This program is known to be rigorous and especially academically challenging for students completing more than two years. So, this type of action, although not guaranteed for every student, can help those who are struggling.

The IB Induction Ceremony is a very big milestone for IB students because it represents that they have made it halfway through the program or have entered a very beneficial program during their high school years.
