Netflix’s new adaptation of an iconic family
Netflix is known for being a popular streaming platform that often releases original works such as Stranger Things, DAHMER: Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story, and now the show Wednesday. Wednesday is a new take on the classic Addam’s family focusing on the young girl, Wednesday Addams, and her journey through Nevermore academy.
Wednesday has broken records for most hours viewed in a week overtopping Stranger Things by 6.19 million hours (about 706 years) more. One of the contributing factors to Wednesday’s success is the cast of famous actors such as Jenna Ortega who portrays Wednesday, Luis Guzman who plays Gomez Addams and Percy White, who is one of the love interests in the show. Christina Ricci, who played one of the teachers on Wednesday, was the original actor for Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991).
Jenna Ortega has been praised for her performance on Wednesday as viewers noticed she never blinked unless her character felt emotion and even choreographed an entire dance routine by herself to better understand and accurately portray Wednesday
The show is about the young Addams girl as she is transferred to a private academy called Nevermore which is known as a school for the outcast. Throughout the episodes, Wednesday is determined to uncover hidden truths and solve a mystery involving her classmates and the neighboring town.
However, as she tried to find answers about the world around her, she must also answer questions about herself. Wednesday is known for being an independent and abrasive woman who does not care about the opinions of others. Throughout the show, we see her ability to not care is a powerful weapon but also her greatest weaknesses. She is unable to connect to those around her who want to befriend and help her. This creates a big internal conflict for Wednesday as she must learn how to navigate friendships during everything.
Wednesday’s success was not pure luck, but hard work and passion put into the project that made Charles Addams, the creator of the Addams family, creation come to life.
