A Review on Perks of Being a Wallflower

Perks of Being a Wallflower (rated PG-13) is a film adaptation of a book by the same name. The film and novel were both written by Stephen Chobsky, who also directed the movie.

It is a romance and drama film that is heartfelt and relatable. The main cast includes Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller.

Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age film that covers the light-hearted aspects of high school and new friends, as well as serious topics, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

The main character, Charlie (played by Logan Lerman), a rising freshman, had recently lost his best friend and was left to navigate high school alone. He becomes friends with two step-siblings that take him in. The movie follows Charlie and his newfound friends working their way through high school while also portraying Charlie battling with his mental health.

The movie starts with Charlie writing a letter to an unknown and unnamed person, describing his life and struggles. These letters continue throughout the movie and help Charlie realize things about himself that he never recognized before.

The film displays the importance of opening up to somebody, even if you are hesitant to speak up about your feelings through these letters. This is a vital message for young adults because it may be hard to deal with emotions alone, and it’s necessary to reach out to others.

Today, mental health has been given more of a platform through social media and the internet, and it’s important to keep spreading that message. This film successfully achieves this goal by showing an example of a person experiencing personal struggles, allowing teenagers with similar feelings to know they are not alone.

I enjoyed Perks of Being a Wallflower and all it has to offer. Coming-of-age films such as this one can be essential for teenagers to watch. It helps highlight the transition between childhood and adolescence. This transition is difficult for many to take on, but movies like this can provide guidance.

Additionally, it gives teenagers something to relate to. For example, Perks of Being a Wallflower accurately portrays feeling alone in this world, which many teenagers experience. It provides solutions to these troubling feelings, like getting in touch with friends or family, and shows why it’s helpful to do so.

Speaking about mental health helps adolescences speak up about their struggles, allowing them to seek help. The movie was released during Suicide Awareness Month and helped highlight things teenagers may be battling with. Youth are still able to relate to the film, although it aired in September 2012. Perks of Being a Wallflower can be streamed through Hulu and Amazon Prime.
