The Deerfield Beach varsity wrestling team found success at their recent county tournament at Coral Springs High School on Jan. 30. Senior Captains Ryan Anderson and Kenneth Scott took home the championships in their respective weight classes. Anderson topped the 126 division and Scott placed first in the 195 division.

This is not new for both Anderson and Scott, who also won their divisions at last year’s county championships.

“The way we prepare for big matches and tournaments is working hard and holding each other accountable,” Anderson said. “If we see someone slacking or not putting in 100% effort, we tell them.”

Scott was also named Wrestler of the Week in the Miami Herald for his performance.

“I feel like we have worked hard this season and we have shown that on the mat,” Scott said. “The most important thing is to have fun and stay relaxed.”

Junior Djhondinio Cherancy placed 4th and senior Phong Trang finished 8th in their respective weight divisions. This helped the Bucks to a top 10 finish at the county tournament, placing 8th overall.

Anderson has taken this year rather personally. He was a state qualifier in 2020 and hopes to return back to states this year. He also has his eyes on the 126 district champion title. From a team’s perspective, he hopes the whole wrestling team makes it to the regional tournament. As of right now, the team takes it day by day and makes sure they are better than they were the day before.
