Title Game Features Two Former Deerfield Bucks
The 55th edition of the Super Bowl will feature two powerhouse teams in the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs and the NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be the first time that the Super Bowl will take place in the home stadium of one of the two contenders. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla, the regular home of the Bucs, will be this year’s host. After defeating the Packers in the NFC title game, superstar quarterback Tom Brady and the Bucs will have to put on another show against Patrick Mahomes and the defending champion Chiefs.
The Bucs added Brady in the offseason in a move that surprised many. Brady elected to leave the New England Patriots, where he had won six Super Bowls in 20 seasons, in favor of a new start down south.
Deerfield Beach High will have a few connections to this year’s Super Bowl. Former Bucks football player and 2007 graduate Jason Pierre Paul, a key defensive end for Tampa Bay, will participate in his second championship game after winning Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants. Wil Edmunds, a 2013 Deerfield grad and a member of the Bucs’ scouting team, will also get to enjoy watching the team he helped assemble play in their first title game since 2003. Edmunds was also a member of the Communications Broadcast Arts magnet at DBHS.
Kansas City has dominated their way back to the Super Bowl, going 14-2 en route to owning the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game. After signing their young quarterback Mahomes to a contract extension that can max out at 12 years/$503 million, the Chiefs have been preparing to establish a dynasty much like how Brady did during his time in Foxborough.
Super Bowl LV will air on CBS with kick-off time at 6:30 pm on Sunday, February 7th. It is a battle between two quarterbacks on opposite ends of the spectrum. Tom Brady, an ageless wonder who at 43 continues to dominate the sport; and Patrick Mahomes, who is just entering the prime of what has the potential to be a Hall of Fame career.
