Significance of literature in schools

In the world of education, literature has always played a prominent and pivotal role. Some argue that mandating a subject with no practical application is pointless. Contrary to popular belief, literature can be valuable for understanding others and fostering empathy and communication.

“I believe that literature is important in school because it helps develop critical thinking and empathy,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Christoph Powell.

Some argue that literature is not valuable because it does not have realistic applications. However, research has demonstrated that literature enhances our comprehension of the

‘Theory of Mind’. This is the cognitive capacity of humans to recognize that individuals have beliefs and desires that may contrast with their own. Literature can influence empathy by allowing the person to see things from a viewpoint different from their own. Another thing is that reading and literature can allow the reader to see themselves in a character, which can help them further understand their words, actions, and decisions.

While many books offer valuable lessons and promote positive values, some works may contain negative messages or harmful ideas. Exposure to these messages can impact the reader, especially if they are young or vulnerable. It is important to approach literature with a critical eye and to be mindful of the messages and values that are being presented to the reader to avoid becoming someone who might not be as empathetic as others.

“It [literature] helps you learn a lot,” said DBHS freshman Giselle Gonzales. “It is a good resource.”

Literature is a valuable tool that can improve critical thinking skills in students. Taking part in things like reading and writing can help students enhance their abilities when it pertains to things like evaluation and analysis. It can give students a chance to communicate their thoughts and feelings on a topic, causing them to think in more complex ways. Students can learn to apply ideas they have learned, and they will have a more logical approach to problems they face in the future.

It is worth mentioning that while literature can be an excellent source of information and knowledge, it can also be misleading or outdated at times. This can be a cause for concern as it may lead to students acquiring inaccurate or irrelevant information, which can negatively impact their learning and understanding. Therefore, educators and students should take certain things with a grain of salt and use critical thinking when using literature as a source of information.

Being a form of art has its advantages and disadvantages. However, despite its drawbacks, it can also have a significant impact on students of all age groups. It helps students develop empathy and emotional intelligence by exposing them to different perspectives and experiences.
