Be mindful of the signs

Suicidal thoughts can occur to anyone, especially growing minds. Reasons can come from many different things like school, work, stimulants, friends, and even home life. This poses the pivotal importance of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This way, students know that their thoughts are valid, and it’s okay to reach out for help.

In America, 20% of people ages 15-24 reported thoughts of suicide, and 9% have attempted it. Along with the increasing depression rate in teens over the years, there was a need to create an official hotline ‘988’ which has shown itself to be more efficient than 911. This line has been helpful, especially in calming people down and getting them the support that they need.

Everyone comes with different experiences but, over time specialists have seen a pattern in behaviors that could potentially come in handy for students at DBHS. Some signs to look out for can include loss of interest in activities, requiring sleep for a long period, or distancing from people they love. Finer details are mood swings, de-attachment of possessions, increasing the use of substances, and mentioning the act of suicide.

In news of this, the school has made adaptations to its facilities by adding the Beach House at 910 Buck Pride Way. This building service is dedicated to the sole purpose of the well-being of the students of DBHS providing a pantry with toiletries, food, and water for families with lower income along with social workers and therapists.

Humans struggle with many mental blocks, suicide being one of them and the community must recognize this. A big part of this goal is spreading awareness of suicide prevention not only for students and teens, but everyone whose lives can be altered by this decision.
