BCPS TO HOST VIRTUAL GRADUATION CEREMONIES FOR CLASS OF 2020

Broward County Public Schools announced virtual graduation ceremony dates, Deerfield Beach High School’s is scheduled to be Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 4:00 PM. The graduation ceremony will broadcast live on BECON-TV so family and friends, local and across the country, can join in celebrating this milestone achievement of their seniors.

All ceremonies will provide the traditional pomp and circumstance, including speeches by student representatives, School Board members, District and school administrators, roll call of graduates and other school graduation traditions. Graduates and parents will receive cap and gown information and specific graduation plans from their respective schools.

To Access Virtual Counselor:

1. Click http://bcps.browardschools.com/VirtualCounselor/

2. Click to log in as a “Student”

3. Type in:

Student’s ID number (i.e. 0600000000)

Birthdate (i.e. MM/DD/YYYY). Forward slashes are necessary

Canvas App

Canvas is a Learning Management System designed to simplify teaching and learning by connecting all the digital tools teachers use in one easy place. The Canvas Parent app allows parents to engage in their children’s education by providing access to important class information.

With the Canvas Parent app, parents can

● View the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see syllabus, assignments (title, due date, and instructions) and events.

● Set alerts to view course announcements and/or receive reminders for a specific assignment or event (sent to mobile devices as push notifications).

● Monitor their child’s performance on Canvas assignments (final grade reported in Pinnacle).

The Canvas Parent app flyer  or video shows the easy steps available for parents using iOS or Android devices and can easily be configured in just a few minutes.

Exams

Final Exams for non-EOC courses (6-12)

• The waiver of final exams has been done by BCPS administration. A mark substitution process for the final exam has been developed.

• The substitute mark for the final exam grade will be the higher of the 3rd or 4th Quarter Grade.

• Mark substitution will occur with no need for work by the classroom teacher or school staff.

Final Exams for End-Of-Course (EOC) Courses (6-12)

• The EOC has been waived by the State.

• The mark substitution process for the EOC has been developed.

• Mark substitution will occur with no need for work by the classroom teacher or school staff.

• IF the student earns a grade of “A”, “B”, or “C” in quarter 4, THEN , The mark substitution for the EOC will be the highest of the grades from Quarters 1-4;

• IF the student earns a grade of “D” in quarter 4, THEN The grade for the EOC is the highest of the grades from Quarters 3 or 4

• The EOC substitution mark will be 30% of final course grade. Final Grades

• Final grades for secondary (grades 6-12) courses are calculated from quarter grades, mid-terms, and final exams/EOCs. *Final grades are calculated by the appropriate formula described in SBBC Policy 6000.1

Testing

•   All state testing, Florida Standards Assessments (FSAs), End-of-Course exams and other state mandated examinations are cancelled.

•   There are no testing requirements for seniors, excluding AP courses. They must successfully complete their courses and have a 2.0 or above GPA.

•   End of Course Exams (EOC) will not be held this year. We do not have the formula for calculating final grades for EOC courses. Students must continue to maintain a passing grade in their EOC classes.

Reimbursements

Reimbursements have started

• Students who made payments with a credit card will get reimbursements back on the card used for initial payment.

• Cash payments will get a check mailed to a current address or distributed on Wednesday, June 4th or Thursday, June 5th during cap and gown distribution.

Transcripts

Students did not complete their Naviance survey for the final transcripts and need an official copy have to contact Deerfield’s registrar office over the summer.

Senior Survey

The 2019-2020 Broward Graduation Survey is now open in Naviance.

•  Seniors MUST fill out the graduation survey in Naviance, listing the college they plan to attend. Then, their final transcript will be sent to this college automatically in June following graduation.
