Beware of the Flu

Comments Off on Beware of the Flu

The annual virus season has begun; however, influenza is hitting harder than usual. Because of this, Deerfield Beach High School wants to inform parents and students about the disease, prevention methods, and encourage them to get the flu shot.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by viruses that can cause severe results such as hospitalization or death. People with a higher risk of catching the bug are young children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions. Even though, others not in those groups must still watch out for symptoms that are related to the virus such as fevers, chills, headaches, or respiratory issues (chest discomfort or breathing complications). Fortunately, getting the flu can be prevented by:

  • Getting vaccinated
  • Covering up when coughing or sneezing
  • Washing hands thoroughly and frequently
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
  • And if sick, stay home

For students and parents who want to find a flu vaccine center nearby can go to this website. If symptoms get worse, contact your health provider or go to the hospital. For more information, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/parents/index.htm
